With a gentle lurch forward, you embark on a nostalgic journey back in time up to one of the most striking Alpine summits in the beautiful Salzkammergut region. In around 35 minutes, the steepest cog railway in Austria climbs 1190 vertical meters from St. Wolfgang in Upper Austria on its way to the mountain station just below the summit, which actually lies inside Salzburg province. Whereas the genteel ladies of the first half of the 19th century relied on the services of “litter bearers” to get them to the top, the opening of the SchafbergBahn cog railway on 1 August 1893 turned this into a world-famous attraction for all.

ROUTE

St. Wolfgang Valley Station

The journey to the top of the Schafberg starts at the valley station in St. Wolfgang. After a few minutes and approximately 472 meters, the track crosses the provincial border between Salzburg and Upper Austria and then continues its steep ascent through lush fields and green forests. After 2.7 km, the train reaches the Dorneralm dodge at 1,015 meters above sea level, where Lake Wolfgangsee can already be seen in all its glory.

Schafbergalm

After approximately 30 minutes of travel time and 4.2 km of distance, the cog railway reaches the Schafbergalm station at 1,364 meters. This stop also marks the treeline of the Schafberg. From Schafbergalm, it takes another 10 minutes to reach the top by train.

Mountain Station

During the last part of the route, the SchafbergBahn passes close to rock walls and finally through two tunnels before it reaches the mountain station at 1,732 meters. Once there, you can admire one of the most beautiful mountain panoramas in Austria.
